Greetings,

As we head into fall, the GBBA has many successes to announce from its productive summer, from the hiring of new personnel who bring experience and enthusiasm to our organization to having hosted many exciting and well-attended social events.

On the staffing front, the GBBA is pleased to announce Antoinette Velasco as its new Executive Director.  Previously employed by Rutgers University, Antoinette served as the Senior Program Coordinator in the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Antoinette received her B.A. in marketing and management from Berkeley College and has a background in human resources and legal services. The GBBA also welcomes Rebecca Izzi as its Lawyer Referral Services Coordinator.  Rebecca is a recent graduate of UCONN where she received her B.A. in political science.  Please join me in welcoming Antoinette and Rebecca to the GBBA and wishing them both well in their new positions.

In addition to our new hires, the GBBA is proud to have hosted some of our most successful social events this past summer. On July 18th, over 60 members took a brief respite from their labors to enjoy a gorgeous evening at the beautiful Black Rock Yacht Club.  Another social followed in early September with an end-of-the-summer beach party at the Jacky Durrell Pavilion.  Members and their families and friends were treated to a spectacular sunset over the sound which faded to a stunning full moon as they watched.

Now that autumn is here, the GBBA will be hosting several upcoming events, programs, and socials.  Dedicated Committee Chairs will be offering a variety of continuing legal education seminars at the GBBA offices.  For information about upcoming happenings, please visit the GBBA’s website, www.bridgeportbar.org, as well as the calendar of events posted in this issue of News Brief.

As my year as GBBA president goes into high gear, I wanted to share some of my highest priority goals. First and foremost among them is to facilitate a platform upgrade of the GBBA’s website.  I am confident that by improving our online access and presence, we will not only serve our members better but will increase our membership and community outreach efforts. Secondly, I would like to focus on growing our young lawyers’ membership.  This year, the YLC will be planning and sponsoring a number of events and on October 13, 2017 will be presenting the Judges’ Luncheon at the offices of the GBBA.  The event is exclusive (and free) for young lawyers. Perhaps you may even consider mentoring a young lawyer through the GBBA’s Mentoring Committee.

With all the GBBA has to offer, we hope that you consider attending one or more of our many events, whether educational or social. Finally, as we celebrate Constitution Day on September 17, 2017 commemorating the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution, I invite you all to take a moment to reflect on the freedoms, liberties, and protections guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

Thank you for your continued support of the GBBA.
