President’s Message January/February 2017

January 10, 2017 Comments Off on President’s Message January/February 2017

Greetings and a Happy New Year to All:

One of the most active Committees in our Bar Association is the Foreclosure Committee chaired by Attorneys Louis Zowine and Edward P. McCreery, III. They faithfully schedule monthly meetings which are well attended and very informative! Although Lou threatens to leave and retire when he sells his Trumbull home, I commend him for his superlative work for the GBBA!

The Budget Committee met, and with Nancy Ganassini’s help, worked out a viable 2017 list of anticipated

expenses and revenue. Invoices went out recently for our 2017 dues with an earnest request to add an additional sum for “sustaining members.” Dues, and this additional charge, have resulted in a financially stable Bridgeport Bar Association, and I personally urge members to send in dues as we face 2017 expenses. Membership applications are available on the GBBA’s website.

Thanks to Attorney Fred Ury for a very informative and well attended seminar on the new enacted MCLE

Our Law Day Committee has been very active planning the GBBA’s annual Law Day celebration which will  held at the Bridgeport Holiday Inn as it has for the last several years. The Hallen Elementary School chorus will

participate, and this year’s Liberty Bell Award will go to The Center for Family Justice located on Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport. Please await the notice which will go out in April.

Attorney Kathleen Dunn organized a very successful hot lunch at The Thomas Merton Center. Kathleen makes a supreme effort to buy all the food which is prepared by GBBA “helpers” who then serve a hot lunch to over 200 people including young families with children! What a joy it was to see such happy faces…thanks Kathleen!

The holiday season is always a happy one, but this year was dampened by the loss of Attorney Irv Kern who died at an early age after practicing with Cohen and Wolf for over 40 years. The enormous crowd at his funeral service attested to Irv’s great personal appeal and expertise as a lawyer. Shortly after, we lost Attorney Vincent Simko, a veteran lawyer whose energy had no bounds! Both “gentlemen of the law” will be sadly missed.

The GBBA hosted its annual Holiday Party this year with record attendance at the Black Rock Yacht Club. As many members knew in advance, our wonderful Executive Director, Nancy R. Ganassini, announced her retirement, and we used this festive occasion to celebrate and honor Nancy for 14 years of service! Along with speeches, the GBBA gave Nancy a monetary retirement gift which was well deserved. Thank you, Nancy: you will be missed by all!

Recently I had a conversation with a fellow lawyer who was convinced, and had no trouble in convincing me, that lawyers, perhaps in general, and in our area, have lost the respect of the community. My point is that the community at large rarely sees or hears about all the good works, pro bono work, and other endeavors that attorneys and bar do for the common good. I am open to all suggestions as to how to “plead our case” so that our profession (one that I have proudly been member for 45 years) can regain the respect that attorneys once had. We are all proud of our profession, and we should be able to say so!

President’s Message November/December 2016

November 4, 2016 Comments Off on President’s Message November/December 2016

Fall is in the air and the beaches are closed.  We can now settle into cool weather and year end thoughts.

In 2017, all practicing attorneys in Connecticut will be required to complete twelve (12) hours of continuing legal education requirements (CLE).  Local bars were not in favor of this mandatory requirement, but the good news is lawyers can attain up to two (2) credits toward the twelve (12) hours requirement in the calendar year 2016!  In an attempt to take advantage, the GBBA has held and will schedule several seminars in its local office on Broad Street which will meet CLE requirements.  Please read the emails that will go out starting with an Estate practice seminar scheduled for Friday, October 28th.

Plans are already in the works for Law Day 2017.  The Law Day Committee is seeking nominations for this year’s Liberty Bell Award.  If you know of anyone who qualifies for this prestigious award which is presented at our Law Day Celebration, please complete the nomination form on page 8 and forward it to the GBBA office.  The deadline for nominations is December 1st.  Plans are also underway for our Annual Dinner meeting scheduled for May 16, 2017 at Tashua Knolls Restaurant.  (See page 4 for additional information)  .

Nancy Ganassini, our Executive Director, was very pleased with the many informative articles she placed in the GBBA News Brief and has encouraged all members to email any article of interest to the offices of the bar (

Many thanks to Cohen and Wolf, P.C. who generously hosted the GBBA’s Annual “Judges’ Reception.”  Many of the newly assigned Judges attended the event and the Family Law Committee was particularly interested in meeting

Judge Maureen M. Murphy, the newly assigned PJ-Family Matters.  The Family Law Committee followed up with Judge Murphy and sponsored a lunch meeting to discuss new court requirements.

On October 6th,  the GBBA sponsored its Fall Social at A‘vucchella Trattoria located on Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport.

On Thursday, October 20th,  the Outreach Committee of the GBBA conducted its “Read Aloud” program at our adopted school, Hallen Elementary School.  Thanks to the participation of Attorneys Kathleen Dunn and George Markley, members of the Bar met at 9:00 a.m. at the school and were then assigned books to read aloud to specific classes.  I participated and read to 6th graders who were polite and attentive!  This is just one aspect of the very active Community Outreach Committee.

Along these lines, the GBBA cooked and served a hot lunch at The Thomas Merton Center on Thursday, October 27th.  Each year we have a large group of volunteers who cook and serve a hot lunch to a growing number of needy families.  I have participated in this rewarding event each year and urge members to join in or donate towards the cost of the lunch.  Once again we thank Kathleen Dunn for her unselfish dedication to this project!

Judge Barbara Bellis joined Executive Director Nancy Ganassini, Attorneys Janine Becker and Stephanie Dellolio and myself for lunch last week.  This is the second year Judge Bellis joined us to talk about bench-bar relations.  Many topics were discussed: court security, reduced clerk and marshal staffing, separate attorney court entrances, and other court procedures.  Judge Bellis is very receptive to improving bench-bar relations and will be available in January for a lunch meeting open to all member of the Bar.

Just a reminder that the GBBA food drive for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday will be scheduled as will the “Tots for Toys” during the Christmas season.

President’s Message September/October 2016

September 8, 2016 Comments Off on President’s Message September/October 2016

   By:  Peter O’Connell

Hopefully, with the good sunny weather of July and August, everyone enjoyed the summer of 2016.

Last year it was suggested that the Bar Association sponsor a “Lobster Fest” at the Pavilion at Fairfield Beach.  The response was good and the plans made. The appointed evening on the beach was delightful:  clear, sunny, cool, but the caterer was late to arrive, slow to cook the main course, and the result was a late lobster dinner!  This year the plan was to simplify the evening and call it a summer barbecue!  The pavilion was rented, music trio engaged, but the response was minimal. A quick decision was made: refund those members who had paid and open the evening to all members of the bar for a free evening at the beach, but “bring everything:  food, drink, families, etc.  The response was a very pleasant evening at the beach with about 35 participants.

As summer winds down, the Greater Bridgeport Bar activities will gear up.  With the CLE requirements for 12 hours per year needed for all practicing attorneys in Connecticut effective January 1, 2017, the Bar intends to offer seminars at the Bar headquarters which will be relevant, reasonably priced, and will qualify for the new requirements.

On Monday, August 29, 2016 all Committee members met at Koskoff’s office to discuss upcoming events for the 2016-2017 year ahead with specific emphasis on the CLE pending requirements.

Just a reminder:  Cohen and Wolf will sponsor our annual “Meet the Judges” reception at their office on September 20, 2016.  You should have received your invitations by now and have, hopefully, responded.

Our next “Fall Social” will be on October 6, 2016.  All members and friends are welcome to attend.

It is my hope that after this peaceful summer that our Greater Bridgeport Bar Association will once again remain active, and that the large membership will continue and new young lawyers join up in large number in the upcoming year.
